We are a couple years early, but I remember reading about plans for a fairly comprehensive bike and pedestrian path underway in Indianapolis and being fairly impressed all things considered:
http://www.indyculturaltrail.org/timeline.html Especially downstate Indiana has some nice bike country. A lot of uncrowded country roads going over moderately rolling terrain. Nice place to visit late Fall when Wisconsin and Iowa are starting to get nippy. I probably will bring one of my bikes with me. Too bad Amtrak no longer goes to Indy from Chicago.
