The interesting thing, for me, is that I have not enabled xinerama but
ratpoison 1.4.8 works just fine.

Helpful link and I think I know what I have done wrong.  However, I'm
away from that computer now and my other systems all have no problems
with 1.4.9 but will get back to you with an update soon.
