I welcome the idea but I'd rather see this approached from the 
id-tagging-schema side. One of the biggest issues with the current label system 
in openstreetmap-website is that it is deeply embedded into the website code. 
This makes it impossible to reuse all the translation work that was done in 
other projects. If we switch the system, I'd rather see us go for a more 
generalist approach:

Create supporting libraries (available at least as javascript and ruby 
implementation, ideally more) that can create localized labels for OSM objects 
from the id-tagging-schema data. Then just use the library here in 
openstreetmap-website. This would open up the system to many projects and maybe 
also bring in more contributors to maintain the code.
