I'm in favor of subtly applying option 2 (Darken the maps).  When the dark 
theme originally went live the map dimming filter was significant and 
definitely felt hard to read, but since then the dimming has been reduced and I 
find it not too bad currently.  It still does feel a bit dull and low contrast 
but I think some slight tweaks to the filter could resolve this.  I played 
around with boosting the contrast and saturation just a few percent and found 
this improved readability without changing the overall color perception much.
