You should check out John Fox's Rcmdr package, 
https://cran.r-project.org/package=Rcmdr
It was designed for exactly the situation you describe - desire to have a GUI, 
with R underneath, but also usable.

A nice feature is that there are many 'plugins' others have developed to extend 
the design beyond the standard suite for descriptives, linear models, etc
