What exactly happens when you connect.
On Port 465, you should use an SSL wrapper to connect. Telnet will NOT
work connecting to port 465. Try any working SMTPS mail server.
On Port 25 and 587, you must issue an EHLO first, then see whether
STARTTLS is offered. You
i do it with thunderbird to test ssl via port 465 and swaks to port 587
tls, both worked well.
As a practical and suitable testing tool, you may for example use
smtptest bundled with Cyrus IMAPd instead of telnet. This tool
supports smtp over SSL and starttls.
