Don't your mailing lists employ some mailing list manager (like ezmlm)
that changes the envelope sender and adds suitable header fields to
stop vacation type programs from responding? If they don't, they
should, and your complaints probably won't go very far. If they do,
then these autoresponders seem to be guilty of two sins: Responding to
a header From address rather than the envelope sender, and ignoring
any indications that this is mailing list material.

Personally, I would be tempted to just remove these people from the
mailing lists in question. With an explanation, of course.

Hello.
I would like to know how to configure qmail to use virtual domains.
My goal is making my qmail server responsible for the maildelivery for
serveral domains.
The problem is I don't know how to configure it.
It is requered that:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Is 3 different email accounts.
How should that be configured.
It would be nice if someone could send me an description and maybe the
configuration filses.
Regards.

Perhaps when /etc/ppp/ip-up.local executes /usr/local/bin or wherever
tcpclient is, is not in the PATH. Try something like:
PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin maildirsmtp ~alias/pppqueue ...

Hello,
I'm thinking about setting up a virtual domain on my qmail server.
Reading the documentation I'm pretty sure I know how to do this, it
doesn't seem complicated.
What I'd like to do though is have a virtual domain with email address
forwarding, and have this "remotely maintainable" -- for example, via a
web form. All the documentation and pointers I found were setting
about a virtual domain and then having the domain's mail stored in
POP-mailboxes, but I don't want that. Rather, the email should be
forwarded to another address, specific for each user for that domain.
Eg. if the virtual domain is somewhere.com, then [EMAIL PROTECTED]
should be forwarded to [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Actions needed for the remote administering of the domain would thus
be to create a new redirect alias, list/edit existing ones, and delete.
Has anyone ever set up anything like this, or knows of any program or
scripts to help me having something working along these lines? Any
other suggestions on how to go about setting up something like this?
Thanks,
Mikko

If you use the vchkpw program for virtual domains, then you can
use the qmailadmin program for web based administration
you can pick up a copy of vchkpw off our site
http://www.inter7.com/qmail/ look in the middle of the page for
the source code link.
you can pick up a copy of the qmailadmin off this site
http://www.inter7.com/qmailadmin/
if you want a web based email program similar to hotmail
http://www.inter7.com/sqwebmail/
These are all open source projects.
Ken Jones
Vchkpw
htt
All you have to do is to set up a user in virtualdomains
some.domain.com:someuser
then in someuser's home dir create lots of .qmail- files, ie
.qmail-someone
containing nothing else but
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
will route all mail for [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
scripting should be easy, its just creation / deletion and ammending of these
.qmail- files you will have to deal with.
Oh, one other thing, to create an alias of [EMAIL PROTECTED], qmail likes
.'s to become : so the alias file will have to be called .qmail-j:doe.

Yes, it's easy, but still it's more than a 5-minute job to write a
web interface for it, or any other kind of remote administration
interface for that matter. That's why I asked if anyone's done it
before and had a ready program for it. I don't want to re-invent the
wheel.

vchkpw? I looked and it seems like it's got something to do with
POP:ing... I don't want POP-able accounts for the virtual domain.
Well, maybe those too later, but it's not what I am looking for right
now. Good to know this program exists though. :)
> you can pick up a copy of the qmailadmin off this site

Seems nice, but rather heavy-duty for my use. I only want the virtual
domain(s?) be remotely administrated, not the entire qmail setup. The
goal is to provide a virtual domain with forwarding accounts on my
server but let someone other deal with the administration.
Thanks for the responses.

And that's why we need to say "make check" when people
ask this question.
I want to throw something out here and I'd value the insight from you guys.
Regarding the below instructions, I realize that the use of .qmail-* files
is how Qmail was "designed". But I find them to be rather clumsy.
For example, what if you have mail coming in to
.qmail-name1
.qmail-name2
.qmail-name3
Unless most of them are forwarding, aren't we going to have to create
multiple stores, as in ./Maildir1, ./Maildir2, ... in the users home
directory? (I'm assuming that the entry in "assign" is a wildcard, as:
+domain.com:popuser:888:888:/usr/qmail/popboxes/domain.com:-::)
The implementation I prefer is specifying EVERY domain in "virtualdomains",
such as:
domain1.com:domain1.com
domain2.com:domain2.com
Then every user gets a private home directory and .qmail file (for
convenience, organized by domain):
/usr/qmail/popboxes/domain1.com/name1/.qmail
/usr/qmail/popboxes/domain1.com/name1/Maildir/
and there is a separate "assign" entry for each recipient of each domain:
=domain1.com-name1:popuser:888:888:/usr/qmail/popboxes/domain1.com/name
1:-::
=domain1.com-name2:popuser:888:888:/usr/qmail/popboxes/domain1.com/name
2:-::
=domain2.com-name1:popuser:888:888:/usr/qmail/popboxes/domain1.com/name
1:-::
We're an ISP, and it seems that Qmail was designed for a system with a
bunch of local users and that we're sort of having to "coerce" Qmail into
serving our needs. But I would think that even many small businesses have
to use multiple domains, and would find the above approach more orderly,
systematic, and natural.
I realize that the .qmail-* approach makes sense from a Unix point of view,
allowing all maildrops for that "user" to reside in a common directory. But
that implementation doesn't seem like it would scale well to large systems
with many domains as does the single-uid/virtualdomains approach. (Keep in
mind that we have automated the creation, deletion, forwarding, passwords,
etc of all accounts via a Telnet interface which we have linked through a
Visual Basic gui [coupled via a Sql Server database] that all our phone
reps can access, and we plan to put support for all these services on a web
page soon). With the single-uid/virtualdomains approach, every mail drop
can be manipulated with the same, automated interface. (Yes, we also have
support for "single-box domains", where all mail to "your-domain.com" gets
delivered to a "default" user, and then they use ETRN or pullmail retrieval
and remote parsing).
So, I'd value your input here. Let me help to focus what I'm looking for:
1) Is anything I'm saying valid?
2) Are there any drawbacks to the single-uid/virtualdomains approach?
3) Why do you use the implementation *you* use?
Thanks in advance!
Dave

The latest issue of the SANS Security Digest has something the list might be
interested in:
06/01/1999 - Darren Reed, the author of IP Filter, announced the release of
Nsyslog, a syslog implementation that
* supports TCP connections
* can be used with SSL to encrypt delivery of syslog messages
* can be used with libwrap and /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} to only accept log
connections from given hosts
* allows you to set a desired fsync rate for given log files

Hi Folks,
I would like to use host masquerading on our mail server. I haved
followed the instructions in the faq thusly:
echo odel.on.ca > /var/qmail/control/defaulthost
chmod 644 /var/qmail/control/defaulthost
My question is does this affect anything but qmail-inject? Does the
traffic on the smtp server get affected. I would like it to. I am using

If you don't know what this is, the answer is that you're not.
Well, he might still be running the yp server. So I think he should
run
/etc/rc.d/init.d/ypserv stop
rpm -e ypserv (or just `chkconfig ypserv off')
Mate
/etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail-qmail-pop3d.init is provided to manage a POP daemon.
However, this is untested and needs to modified in order to work.
Ok, that's true, it doesn't work. Does anyone know what modifcations he is
referring to? Should I remove the qmil-pop3d.init file and start pop-3
myself in my qmail startup script?
The docs you are using are outdated. The pop3d.init script should
work. How did you start pop3d? What errors do you get?
Mate
I think his problem might be he does not have checkpasswd installed.
Mate
if there's no *qmail-pop3d.init in /etc/rc.d/rcx.d
then do the following:
in /etc/rc.d/rc0.d and /etc/rc.d/rc1.d and /etc/rc.d/rc2.d and
/etc/rc.d/rc6.d
# ln -s ../init.d/qmail-pop3d.init K48qmail-pop3d.init
in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d and /etc/rc.d/rc4.d and /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
# ln -s ../init.d/qmail-pop3d.init S82qmail-pop3d.init
this would start/stop the pop3d daemon automatically upon system
start/stop/restart
It is simpler to do
chkconfig qmail-pop3d on
Mate
Is it normal, when using the "zuids" script in qmailanalog, to see an abnormal
ammount of messages comming from user qmaild?

Hi,
I checked several times the INSTALL document with all the jumps to other
INSTALL.* documents, but I stop at the test.
The test with qmail-inject works fine, but with telnet localhost 25 does
not work and give me a "Connection refused" error.
If I use sendmail, than the connection is not refused.
Also the start of the program blocks the window. It seems the `&' is not
taken, however I cannot cancle it in this window either.
In case it is important: I use Linux with kernel 2.2.4
... im sure it is an easy question, ... but I too blind to see it by
myself ....

Hello, I'm new to Qmail and haven't even installed it yet. What we're
looking for is whether or not the html pages can be customized so we can
setup a web interface similar to hotmail.
Is this possible?
Thanks,
Sienna
Many different freeware, commercial, and open source web interfaces exist
for use with not only qmail, but also with any MTA that supports POP3 or
IMAP.
Some off the top of my head are:
SQwebmail (supports Maildir)
IMP (supports IMAP)
qdpop (supports POP3 written in PERL)
and tons of others.

I finished beta testing a new version of vchkpw.
download http://www.inter7.com/qmail/ look in middle of page
or down farther in email for direct download file.
It is modified to support this one new feature:
If a virtual domain user authenticates for pop access..
the smtp server is open to relay from that IP address
for one hour. (defaults are not easily changed, must be programmer)
When a user authenticates via pop.. the users IP address and current
local time is recorded in a file. If the IP address is already in the
file the old entry is deleted and the new entry is added. (Thus providing
one more hour of relaying support).
This package depends on the following Open Software packages:
1) qmail-1.03 off www.qmail.org authors home page.
2) tcpcontrol.. (ucspXXXstupid stuff) off the qmail authors home page.
3) vchkpw-3.4.2kj off http://www.inter7.com/qmail/vchkpw-3.4.2kj.tar.gz
The documentation totally sucks. But the code works. Even if the required
files are not present on the machine. Hopefully we can update the
documentation so that it's alot easier to setup.
Next version of vchkpw from inter7 site will support a
"config;make;make install" format.
Version after this will support the vchkpw authors new version that uses
cdb hash files for fast lookup (we have noticed that virtual domains with
less that 8K users have no problem with the 3.4.1 version). However, it's
always better to make things more efficent. Hopefully sites with 1 million
emails per virtual domain will work efficently.
Next version after that will incorroprate more efficent use of virtual
domain pop and alias/forward accounts for more than 8K users.
Heh Heh. I don't think this all will get done for free, but hell, we are
going to try. If you want to contribute email me back.
Last thing we are going to try and do is create a distribution with the
cool qmail things. Like a qmail base, tcpserver, ezmlm, autoresponder,
virtual domains, web based admin for domains, web based email interface.
I think a killer qmail distribution will send shock waves thru the
open source community and get press off the national media outlets.
Let's put another nail in microsofts coffin.
>From my Mentors conversations, "Revenge is nobel".
Anyway.. later, you got the update from inter7 labs. we still have alot
to do. but you've got the latest info.
BTW: any web authors with good graphic skills who want to help build
better free and non capitalistic web interfaces for qmail, which will
help destroy the microsoft strangle hold on abusive competition, please
email me back and lets combine forces.
I personally interviewed with microsoft 9 years ago and decided I didn't
want to work in such a combative environment. I enjoy sharing ideas instead
of bludgening my fellow developers with humiliation and degradation. So
all of you out there who would like to get involved, email me.

Hi,
There is too many letters to delivert in our server, although I have set both
'concurrencylocal' and 'concurrencyremote' to 120,It seems too low.And the letter
sent
to our server will be received at least half an hour later.. :(
Can anyone one tell me how can I set the value concurrencylocal&concurrencyremote
more high?
Btw: It is very strange, Our server will receive about 100000 letters per day, but the
benchmark of qmail say it can do it easy... (Our server is Freebsd 3.0 SMP
Kenerl+qmail 1.03, 2*PII 400, Intel GX mainboard,3*18G Ibm scsi hardisk,1M ram,there
is
about 40000 users,i am using assign&cdb instead of /etc/passwd).
My english is bad ,sorry.

... and might not.
It took 3 painfull, grueling, days, and I'm still not sure what I did.
But, it works. What works? I installed qmail on Linux 5.1 using the
Memphis RPM. I had tried this once before with the html version of the
install docs: http://yoda.cs.ru.ac.za/~keith/redhat.html#memphis. That
didn't work. I read at least 3 mails in this group that read that it
works. So, I tried again. This time I followed the directions in the ftp
directory: ftp://moni.msci.memphis.edu/pub/qmail/README
There was a part in there that read
The daemontools and ucspi-tcp packages install with /usr/local
prefix.
and
Make sure that you are installing the daemontools and ucspi-tcp
package from this directory!!
I'm not too sure what this means. But, I moved to /usr/local, and did the
rpm -Uvh's from there. Can't say if this made any difference, but it
worked.
I also followed the advice from Stewart - See Stewart's advice below - to
get pop3 working.
I can't send mail from a mail client (Eudora) on my mac with my new mail
server. But, I'm betting I can figure out why. (If anyone know's why,
please let me know.)
I also set up maildir. Don't know what that really means. But, it all
works as expected.
WHAT A RELIEF! Thanks for all the help directly and indirectly. It would
have taken much much longer without you folks!!

Some people seem to have had problems getting the qmail-pop3d daemon to
work using the qmail-pop3d.init script which the qmail srpm on
www.qmail.org installs. I have successfully got this to work as follows
First off you must install the checkpassword rpm
Now you have to make qmail-pop3d run at boot
Go to /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ (or whatever runlevel you normally boot into)
You should find that in this directory there is a link called
K<n>qmail-pop3d.init , where <n> is a two digit number
Now look for the link S<N>qmail.init, where <N> is another two digit
number
Rename K<n>qmail-pop3d.init to S<a>qmail-pop3d.init , where <a> is any
two digit number you like as long as it is larger than <N>
Restart or equivalent
To summarize the rpm installs symbolic links to the qmail-pop3d.init
script in the rc.d subdirectories. However it gives them numbers lower
than the qmail.init script. This means that the pop3d script executes
before the rest of qmail. Since it depends on other parts of the qmail
system it fails.
I am relatively new to Linux so any comments are welcome
Stewart
Well, I finally got qmail running on my Linux 5.1 system. Basically, I
couldn't have done it without the RPM, and some notes I found on this
mailing group.
Question: How important is it to understand all the details with regard
to installation and starting up? And, if you think it is important, what
resources should I get ahold of to fast track the learning process?
Big question on the matter are, for example, what is going on in all
those .init files? Why were all those (ps vax) processes set up that way?
Anyway, at least it works. I suppose I'll take a backup, and go to bed!
thanks - gene

Hello folks,
I'm using QMAIL 1.03 (with tcpserver)
as a base mail hub for relaying several
mail servers, running SENDMAIL.
I've set relay restrictions with /etc/tcp.smtp.
I've set some addresses in /var/qmail/control/BADMAILFROM
but QMAIL gets messages with such "MAIL FROM:"
and places them in the queue.
Any ideas how to prevent this or why it happens?

What does 'qmail-showctl' say?
If it complains with:
"BADMAILFROM: I have no idea what this file does."
try lowercases in the file name (badmailfrom, not BADMAILFROM).
Hope it helps.

Well, /bin/mail works fine for me on linux red hat (at least 5.2 & 5.0, I
believe all versions since 4.5 are using /bin/mail , that is not from
sendmail package.)
So , I assume no real need to replace /bin/mail w/ anything else. I told
that this month on the list & noone said that I'm wrong. I'm wondering
why this is not cleared in the FAQ. :) The idea of removing /bin/mail is
that it is a part of sendmail package. But in Red Hat it's not:
[13:21:39 root@vgsn ]# rpm -qf /bin/mail | less
mailx-8.1.1-5
[13:21:46 root@vgsn ]#
