I have to disagere.I have dual core amd64 with 3Gb of ram. I setup deadline for email, so SA must report result in 100 seconds otherwise QS will just skip SA. My limit at the moment is around 45 connections for smtp and 33 connections to the SA. Its best setup to have all emails scanned within 100seconds, while you have 45 smtp connections incomming. Amount of memory, that you need for each spamd proccess depend on what plugins you have installed into your SA.
If SA eat too much of your CPU , try sa-compile, it will help a bit. You should also try few tests to find out, what is best setup for smtpd concurency and spamd concurency for your CPU and memory. Do not forget, that more emails getting proceed in parallel does not mean that more emails will be check per second. After each test, take total no. of tested emails and count how much emails it checked per minute.
Fastest mail server is not the one with biggest concurency.I found that SA on dual HT xeon on 2.6Ghz with 3G of ram have biggest performance(emails per minute) with 65 smtpd connc. and 50 spamd connc. It runs w/o problem with stable load around 60 and proceeding all emails under 100 seconds.

Lampa wrote:Hello, i'm using toaster 0.8.3. Sometimes (one per week) i have problem that my server hangs for minute or two. I've limit 50 connections for smtpd (local 20 and remote 10), all 50 connections are used. Server load is about 50 - 100 and mostly is not responding.50-100? That's huge. Anything over 1.0 means the computer has more load than it can "easily handle". Spiking over 1 is fine of course - but 50-100 would definitely make your machine "non responsive". What is the top CPU user? Running top should tell you that. You're box sounds way to grunty to be showing such symptoms with the low SMTP settings you have. A dual-core with 2G ram and SATA should easily be able to handle 200+ connections - not 50. Something is wrong for sure...
