I'm not sure if it made it to the list, but I solved my hanging problem. It was a file ownership issue. When I untarred it, it kept the package maker's UID and GID. I chowned everything to root and it installed fine.

Hello,
I had this similar problem and test the chown root.root, but it does not change nothing.
The only thing I am sure it's these lines which makes the timeout in the configure file. There is no option in the var $SA_HN.
DD="`$SPAMC_BINARY $SA_HN < ./contrib/spamc-nasty.eml`" and DD="`$SPAMC_BINARY $SA_HN -c < ./contrib/spamc-nasty.eml`"
It takes around 1m53.305s to have the answer...
Perhaps some domain name in the E-mail had change for their status, and you go in timeout...
I test with Spamassassin 2.63 and 2.64.
Bye.
