Sorry, you're right about the 'make test', it was a ./configure without the --install 
option.

I did not try it to see if it would work but I saw in the archives people having 
problems running and scanner not working because of this error.  I'm trying to install 
Perl 5.8.4 and I'll see how it goes.

"make test"? Well then you can't be using Q-S as there's no Makefile in it :-)

Apparently perl under Solaris has always "done" Syslog calls differently.
There is specific code in Q-S to make it work, but maybe it doesn't? I don't
know - I don't run Solaris.

Someone who does will need to see if there really is a problem, find a fix,
and tell me about it.

BTW: does the syslog bit work for you? If so, you can ignore the error?
