I'm using qmail-scanner with Clam AV and also Spam Assassin. Everything has worked wonderfully until about ten days ago when the mail server suddenly collapsed and refused to allow command-line log in, or anything else. Having pulled the plug and rebooted the log files suggested that the fatality was caused by 'too many files' being open.
What makes the crash particularly galling is that qmail appears to have died in such a way that the server responds to incoming mail by reporting a 'permanent problem' and bouncing the mail, not by holding it in a queue - I understand that mail for many users on the server was returned to sender. The syslog was littered with warnings from qmail-scanner that 'something cannot handle this file', which the FAQ suggests is caused by a problem in the AV database, which required a new db to be loaded. I run freshclam daily by cron, which is working. For a week or so the system has been working fine, until this weekend when (while I was away) the same thing happened. Logs over the weekend report frequent failed attempts to scan a file, or files, which are requeued and then failed again. Eventually there are too many files open and the system collapses under the strain, and a remote power cycling is required. I am not a technical guru by any stretch of the imagination, so I'd appreciate some guidance as to what might be causing my system to suddenly suffer this problem. Are other users of qmail-scanner, clam and spam assassin seeing a similar error? If so, what does it take to fix it? If not, why might I be unique in this disturbing respect?
