I find your proposal of having dedicated messages types
(VHOST_USER_SLAVE_*) cleaner.
Are you ok if I handover your patch, and replace
VHOST_USER_SET_SLAVE_FD to VHOST_USER_SET_SLAVE_REQ_FD?
