Since Eric has now kindly provided a proper configure test and generic workaround for the SIZE_MAX bug and it is in master, I tried just re-applying this pull request, but unfortunately it has a merge conflict in qapi-schema.json that I don't understand well enough to resolve. So if you could produce a new pull request that would be best, but you don't need to worry about the OSX failure any more. thanks -- PMM
