I just worked around this in cloud-init by disabling the smartOS datasource if the uname arch is arm* or aarch* http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cloud-init-dev/cloud-init/trunk/view/head:/cloudinit/sources/DataSourceSmartOS.py
