I think you should already know of a bug in qemu-img that prevents it from using the -c option; the problem is the line if (flags & BLOCK_FLAG_COMPRESS && drv != &bdrv_vmdk) in img_convert() should read if (flags & BLOCK_FLAG_COMPAT6 && drv != &bdrv_vmdk) That's it!
