I'm working on essentially the same thing for a real-time context. No formal schema developed yet, but I know that I'll be using some combination of the following: ADaM, ESML (Binary data format unification...xml config), Numarray/Scipy, Pytables (DataBase), PIL, Cairo (svg), and MatPlotlib.
