If using Windows I would certainly use Thunderbird or even slrn news reader - I believe there is a version for Windows. Or you could install Interix subsystem which provides UNIX tools for Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional. You'd then have some more choice of MUA client or newsreader client in that environment. Cygwin is another alternative. UNIX systems just use whatever email client you like and subscribe to the list as explained several times by others.
