It would indeed be nice to see this enhanced re module in the standard library e.g. in 3.2, but I also really appreciate, that also multiple 2.x versions are supported (as my current main usage of this library involves py2-only wx gui). As for the usage statistics, I for one always downloaded the updates from here rather than pypi, but maybe it is not a regular case.
