Matthew Barnett <pyt...@mrabarnett.plus.com> added the comment: I started with trying to modify the existing re module, but I wanted to make too many changes, so in the end I decided to make a clean break and start on a new implementation which was compatible with the existing re module and which could replace the existing implementation, even under the same name.
