Ned Deily <n...@acm.org> added the comment: This is almost certainly due to using the Apple-supplied Tcl/Tk 8.5 in Mac OS X 10.6. The Apple-suppied version of Tcl/Tk is buggy to the point of being unusable with Tkinter applications, in particular IDLE. There are many duplicate issues on similar problems, for instance, Issue12269. One solution is to use a current 64-bit/32-bit python.org installer (at the moment, 2.7.3 is the latest for Python 2) *and* install the latest ActiveState Tcl/Tk 8.5.
