Thanks Ben to finally commit your thoughts about proposed logos and
general vision about the soul of the project. I think we should be
careful about the logo because it's a critical aspect of communicating
a first impression to the right audience. And at some point it's not
just a question of logo but a branding one, an implementation of an
identity to every aspect of the project. I personnaly think a
successful design may be produced without special effects, identities
do not need bevels, gradations, 3D and other artificials as core
elements.

Yep, and that's definitely one of the appeals of the Ahket hieroglyph.

The electric theme, as you mentioned, was a way to express what we
thought Pylons was (based on this thread
http://groups.google.com/group/pylons-discuss/browse_thread/thread/ae21a9ca1cddc5bd)
but I think it can start the same here with an egyptian pylon as the
theme.

I think we should start by defining what's the identity of the project
to have basic guidelines available to the design process.

If we go back to that, I fear we will never decide on a logo. :)

I gotta admit, I had actually chosen and was going to go with Markus' logo until I saw Graham's take on it. So far, the hieroglyph has had more positive reactions from everyone who has seen it than any of the other logos we've considered, plus its a theme that is in no way associated with all the negative press about ill effects of electrical pylons, the source of the electricity on such pylons (coal and nuclear power), and that fact that electrical pyons including the one I choose look like a telephone pole which sends some conflicting messages about what exactly Pylons is.

The freedom with the Egyptian glyph is that people don't know what it means, and the meaning works quite well for us. As such, I'm now rather sold on it.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise (which I doubt), consider the logo a done deal. I should note that I've contracted a designer to put together a new website design as well, which I'm rather looking forward to.

Cheers,
Ben
