copying labels from an old variable to a new one.

Hi,
I try to create a new variable on the basis of another one and copy the value labels from one variable to the other. To my surprise, this does not work here. 

GET FILE  ="EVS 2017 short.sav".
freq nuts1.
comp regional = nuts1.
freq regional.

Regional has not received the value labels of nuts1.


How can I achieve this by syntax ? I don't want to retype the labels of 
all 123 European regions which exist already in the data set.
