I've been using the same set of MacBook batteries for years, a couple of them
for
about 5 years now. When my Macbook runs out of power (2.5 +- hours depending on
what
I'm doing) I hibernate it and swap batteries, putting the discharged one in an
external charger. I then unhibernate the computer and continue working. About a
minute downtime.

During work I frequently close the lid which suspends the computer (puts it in
standby). I don't think this has affected my battery life one bit. After years
of
daily use, my batteries all still have probably 80% of their original life left
in them.
