You've played with the different performance switches on both the client and 
server? 
I frequently administer Linux systems in Florida from California over mediocre 
network connections through the VPN. I'm not going to claim stellar performance 
but 
it gets the job done.

One thing that sometimes gives the impression of sluggishness is that progress 
bars, 
pop up messages, windows closing, and the like, don't always draw immediately. 
Also 
if the user has a photo for a desktop background (but there's a switch to 
suppress 
that on the server end).

I have a script and a bash alias written on my laptop (the client) where I can 
type:

vnc sbs george

...and whether george is in Florida, Texas, California, or a laptop on the road 
somewhere, if george is connected to any internet connection I have immediate 
vnc 
access (like within 3 seconds).
