You've played with the different performance switches on both the client and server? I frequently administer Linux systems in Florida from California over mediocre network connections through the VPN. I'm not going to claim stellar performance but it gets the job done. One thing that sometimes gives the impression of sluggishness is that progress bars, pop up messages, windows closing, and the like, don't always draw immediately. Also if the user has a photo for a desktop background (but there's a switch to suppress that on the server end). I have a script and a bash alias written on my laptop (the client) where I can type: vnc sbs george ...and whether george is in Florida, Texas, California, or a laptop on the road somewhere, if george is connected to any internet connection I have immediate vnc access (like within 3 seconds).
