I note parenthetically that the need to drill so far offshore in such deep water is not because of the engineering merits of such an approach (just ask the engineers now who are reduced to mud bombs to stop it), since it would in fact be easier to drill nearer to shore or onshore for the same oil; but because of environmental laws that literally mandate it and make the whole enterprise that much more dangerous, error prone, and harder to fix when things go wrong.
