You'll have to recompile the programs, and the first time you open the 
menu editor, it will inform you that the menu files will be upgrades, 
and save an original for you.  But yes, it's fully backwards compatible.

As far as development goes, no, you won't work in the same manner. 
You'll work in a much BETTER manner.  Seriously, you're going to kick 
yourself for not switching over sooner.
