You might want to poke around howardforums.com, it's a great resource
for mobile phone information and discussions of various carriers.

As far as calendaring goes, have you considered a Windows Mobile or
PalmOS smartphone? The calendaring functions on these wouldn't rely on
the carrier's infrastructure like a Blackberry.

If you wanted to go on the cheap, you could get a used or refurbed
phone and a cheap prepay plan.from somebody like pageplus cellular
(for verizon phones) at $40/month for unlimited talk and text.  With
no contract, it's easy to change your mind and experiment.
