I bought HP's top-of-the-line (this week) OfficeJet 8500 Pro Premier -
there are several 8500 models, beware - for the home office, with
duplex printing, second paper tray, card reader, scanner with ADF and
wired/wireless networking built in. Bought it at Staples on sale,
~$100 off MSRP, with a $50 trade-in for the last dead printer; I think
the total cost was under $300. We're very low volume, so the "give
away the razor, gouge them on razor blades" math doesn't really cost
us too much. There are extra-capacity ("XL") cartridges as well as
frequent-flyer card programs and discounts if you don't want to try
the 3rd party market.
We're using it to print computer graphics and color reports and
charts, not photographs, so I can't speak to the high-end results, but
it's quite good for what we use it for.
We've used it to put together presentations and reports for a couple
of clients and it easily pays for itself in a year. And hopefully
lasts four or five.
