You can put up a solar-powered fan that comes on when the sun shines and is 
over a certain temperature.

We put in a whole-house fan that sucks in all the cool air at night.  It lowers 
the temperature of the whole house lower than the AC would.  We usually don't 
have to turn on the AC until around 3:00 the next day.
