I was a little cautious when moving from 8.04 to 8.10. I waited until I found an Acer laptop of a friend's that 8.04 did not light up WiFi for, and did not work with its sound card. So I went ahead and upgraded to 8.10. That version did work with the WiFi and sound card, perfectly. I have since then installed 8.10 Server onto a new machine, then installed the GUI. That machine has 4Gb RAM, and runs like a triped ass ape.
BTW, the laptop I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on had been a Vista Business machine, with 2Gb RAM. When I got it the machine had been attacked via a Face Book borne threat. I insisted on installing Linux. The owner says his wife LOVES the Ubuntu interface, and has exclaimed several time about how incredibly fast her laptop is now, as compared to having Vista on it. Anyway, I vote you just move to 8.10 and be done with it...
