Thanks, Dave. As usual, you post and then stumble more or less into a 
solution.

To answer your questions, yes I deleted fxps and recompiled both at the 
command line and via the compile dialog. I did this for prgs and forms 
and certain classes.

What appears to have happened here is that VFP was looking in my EXE 
first instead of the source folders. This happened despite the fact that:

the EXE was not in the VFP default folder/current location, although the 
folder it lived in was part of my dev search path
the source folders are in the search path first
sys(2450) is set to its default value of 0

Once I renamed the EXE, all started to work again as expected. This is 
still a bit of a mystery to me as I have similar installations in 
multiple locations that do not behave like this. But I've lost so much 
time trying to figure it out that I'll just file it away under things 
that appear to have no rational explanation and get back to work...
