No I think it was really to get into Peters head that Gentiles could be
allowed into the church, or at that time, "believe in Christ".  You had the
disciples going out and spreading the word and some when out and spoke to
non Jewish people who believed.

So this was Gods way of telling Peter that a newer set of rules were to be
followed.  Jesus is the Messiah and he brings a new world order to all who
will listen and believe.

This must have been a huge hurdle for them to cross.  Their whole life the
teachings of the Jewish traditions were all about them, the chosen people
and the lineages to the familys before them.  Why you could not marry
someone out of your clan because that brought shame unto Israel and its
people were enslaved.  But now it's fine to bring in the pagans and eat the
foods that a couple of years ago were forbidden?  Those must have been very
interesting conversations.

Heck just taking in Saul and he is now calling himself a disciple "Paul"?
That must have caused a lot of friction.
