Peter, Richard, Andrew, Bill, and Mike (did I miss anyone?), Thank you all for your help. Lesson learned: Do not let idle customers surf the net on demo workstations (even if they own the workstations in question). An idle mind is the devil's playground :(
The customer had an up-to-date version of McAfee so the virus must be very new. The virus in question attached itself as an authentication service that I was unable to delete. Furthermore, once you started to remove its components, it took over the login process, preventing anyone from logging in regardless of cracks password or password reset steps - even in safe mode. I ended up booting with Knoppix and backing up important files to a USB pen drive. Now we're waiting for Dell's overnight Windows XP installation CD to rebuild this workstation from scratch. I was unable to install from a generic Windows XP CD because of all the Dell specific drivers required (unit is a Dell Precision Workstation 380). Thanks again for your support!!
