Furthermore the primary cause of faster melting is the flow of water beneath a glacier. There is a film of water between the land and the ice and can be several feet deep which acts as a lubricant and makes the glacier travel 5 to 10 times faster than when there is no film. Then the glacial front drops off into the sea that much quicker.
