Use Knoppix or Clonezilla to backup a physical partition image to
another drive, like an external USB HDD. Then create a new VM, and
boot it with Knoppix or Clonezilla. Restore the image from the HDD to
the VM. Presto!

I've done this several times and it works flawlessly. Now, there may
be problems with proprietary or DRM-encumbered operating systems that
suspect you are stealing their software. IANAL and you'll need to
review the applicable licenses.
