Ed, you shouldn't be surprised by this. After 9/11, all good democratic
governments went into defense mode. They said 'Let's protect ourselves from
the terrorists.'

The U.S. created Homeland Security. It has absolute power to go into
anyone's lives. There was no sunset clause on the creation of it. Everybody
in the U.S. and those who go to visit are in fear of it. It has created a
wall around the U.S. and shut the rest of the world out. Look at the clamp
down on border security between the U.S. and Canada. They want to finger
print, iris scan and photographer every person entering the U.S. They want
fly lists of airline passengers that fly over the U.S. even if the plane
doesn't land in the U.S.

In Canada, we had terrorist legislation passed after 9/11. At least it had a
5 year sunset clause. When it came up for renewal, the government, police
and security people insisted it had to be renewed to keep terrorists out of
Canada. Thankfully and probably more to political maneuvering, it didn't get
renewed. Still police and security personnel in Canada have more powers of
arrest, search and seizure than they have ever had. The American authorities
would be jealous. They have a right to seize the vehicle you are driving too
fast and take away your licence for a minimum of 7 days. No recourse. None
of this innocent until you are proven guilty stuff. You better known the law
and abide by it.

So you are right, Ed, the terrorists have won and they are still out there.
And we continue to allow them to win. I'm beginning to think that the 4
years my father spent fighting for freedom in World War II was for naught.

As a result of the terrorists winning, today I find that there are fewer
people that trust you and I'm doing everything to make sure those people who
trust me are my friends. At least, I'll have some chance of defeating the
terrorists if I keep increasing that circle of friends.
