That certainly is a weird response... Maybe they meant to say that your license covers only a single machine and you are not allowed to install one more in the VM? Or, the asked for the specs of the hardware and meant that it would be too slow when two instances of Avast are scanning at the same time. A google search on "virtual xp mode avast" indicates a number of issues with Avast. If that was the reason for Avast to tell you not to install a virus scanner, you should certainly check out another one that is working.
