Not sure I understand what the fuss is here (and is there some confusion
between email clients and servers/providers?).
For example- I don't run my own mail server because although I have a
static ip my broadband connection is too slow (and anyway I gave up
running my own 'play' servers when the electricity bill got too high).
I started with a straightforward email account with my ISP with
Thunderbird as the client, which also has a webmail option.
I set that to use my own domain name.
Then I added an email account for Mrs. D - still using Tbird, no problem.
I added a GoDaddy hosted website with email server.
Then I started spending several months a year in Goa, the local ISP
(note 'the') originally offered email but (a) that soon dropped away,
and anyway (b) I needed to be able to accept replies to mail sent from
my main (UK ISP) account which were being bounced. The answer to (a) and
(b) was to open a Gmail account with Google Apps (free) which meant I
could use use a spare domain name I had, still use Tbird as client and
set the Gmail domain as reply-to in the Tbird setting for my UK domain.
I now run Tbird with five or six email accounts from four different
servers with no problem. If away from home I do need to check two
webmail sites (the GoDaddy server copies to my main email account).
