If by "Remote Desktop" you mean the remote software that is built-in to
Windows, I can't be of much help. I've used it a few times, didn't care
for it.
Wireless does not have to be DHCP, but the very nature of the beast
(that it will be walking around and connecting to multiple WAPs) kind of
calls for it. Actually, it's been so long since I tried, I'm not sure
that Wireless network (WIFI) software can be set up with static...I'm
sure that some can, but again, the nature of the beast kind of dictates
that if you connect at Star$s this afternoon, then at the office, then
at home, you'll likely be using three different subnets and gateways and
setting those up static would kind of screw that up.
Or, maybe I'm not understanding the problem.
If you use software like I'm using, (Logmein, ScreenConnect, or
Teamviewer among others) the device (laptop) will "phone home" to the
mothership (wherever or whoever that is) once it gets an Internet
connection via whatever, and then you just connect to the "device name"
using the third party software.
ScreenConnect, just to put a salespitch on you, allows for (a) permanent
install setup with custom installation packages that you create (really
easy), or (b) a "per incident" setup where you can send the end user an
email with a URL link back to your server (which in my case is the same
Win7Pro system I develop on) and it works just like if you do a remote
assistance with a phone call to, for example, Cisco, and then there's
third option that allows for even more abstract connections. But it
sounds like you're committed to using the built-in MSoft solution, so
good luck.

Mike: Remote Desktop is a requirement. Do wireless connections have
to be DHCP? This is a laptop at home that the user wants to remote into.

I use Logmein Free extensively with dozens of clients, works like a

License was somewhere in the $300 range, but it has been well worth
it to not have to depend on a 3rd party to provide the link to end
users.
I configure all hard-wired PCs I manage with static
IP/subnet/gateway/DNS settings (wireless devices are DHCP) and have
never had them forget or refuse to use the static settings. (These
are Win2k, WinXPHome, Win7Home, and BUNCH of Win7Pro
systems...somewhere around 200 systems, total.)

I am in bad need of some help. I have numerous clients using remote
desktop in all kinds of configurations. I have one combination that
is not working at two different locations. I have Googled it and
tried everything suggested but still no luck.
It is a Windows 7 computer trying to remote into a Windows 7 computer.
We get "Because of a protocol error this session will be
disconnected. Please try connecting to remote computer again.
There are numerous suggestions and I have tried them all. I can't
believe something that works so well on other versions of the OS are
so difficult here.
Also, when I set a fixed IP address and name servers, Windows 7
keeps changing it back to DHCP. Can you turn off DHCP for one
computer?
Please help. I have spent several days trying to get this one working.
TIA
