Thank you SO Much Ken! I didn't know about that Cleartype thing - or, at least that it was the option that would resolve our problem. I had heard about Cleartype in the past - maybe read about it on the web somewhere.
So - I went to the Desktop - as you suggested - switched it to ClearType, changed my screen BACK to the way it was - ran the system - showed my Boss - and he's happy with the way it looks now. Default is "Standard" but usually "ClearType" looks better. Beyond that, make sure you're doing these tests on identical monitors and graphics cards--or at least on a variety of different ones for both OSes--so you're not being unduly influenced by the characteristics of particular hardware.
