I think I'd run the app in a virtual machine running DOS or whatever

The utilities run in 16-bit DOS.
I have run them under DOSBox successfully, except for the one
that prints as DOSBox does not natively print.
One of my utilities is a file search program. A typical run
takes 13-14 seconds on my XP desktop system. On my faster laptop,
but having to be under DOSBox, it takes just over 3 1/2 minutes.
The utility is useful to me because it has some VFP
awareness. Within broad limits, it will recognise classes and
methods/procedures. It is quite helpful to me to know which methods
a string occurs in.
The slowness breaks my workflow. I am accustomed to checking
code prior to change by running several searches. At seconds, it is
easy. At 3 1/2 minutes each, it discourages using it.
I suppose at some point that I will bite the bullet and try an
emulator. Based on previous experience, I think I will probably get
better speed than DOSBox, but worse than on my XP box.
Sincerely,
Gene Wirchenko
