It's really more the iPhone than the iPad... I don't know if it's better than an android device, as I'm not blind myself and haven't evaluated devices accordingly. I notice, though, that most of our blind or visually impaired friends have an iPhone and not an android. Maybe that's just the group of people I know. Maybe that's because the iPhone was available earlier with sufficient applications. Maybe it's because the device is the same everywhere which means you can take someone else's iPhone and show them how to do certain things. A bigger screen is definitely useful if you are not blind but visually impaired. Our friends use color schemes and zoom level that look horrible to me, but by holding the phone very close to their face they can actually see something. > For a start much of the software is free on android and paid for on > iWhatevers. That's true. To put this in perspective, though, I've paid more on a single MS VC++ 1.52 compiler upgrade than I've spent on iPhone/iPad apps in my entire life. Considering everything else I pay and everything else I wasted money on, the cost of apps isn't relevant for my decision to use one or the other platform.
