Rule #1: Do no harm.

First things first. Don't boot into Windows or the base OS as it tries
to write all over the disk. Use a LiveCD or LiveUSB so it runs out of
memory.

Rule #2: make a backup

Before you start futzing with the disk, potentially rewriting things
and forever erasing other things, make a backup. Most good Linux
distros will let you do a 'dd' to an external drive or a partition
copy (partimage is awesome!) to another drive.

Rule #3: don't use defective hardware

Work on a copy of your copy: install it on a new, known-good disk and
then use file recovery applications, like photorec, on the copy. If
all goes bad, you still have your backup and your original.

As a last resort, you can go back to the original media and try wacky
recovery techniques like leaving it in the freezer overnight. I won't
admit to having that work for me, but 'a friend' got that to recover a
drive.

Did I mention making backups? You can never have too many. External
drives are cheap-cheap-cheap especially in comparison to losing
irreplaceable pictures, etc.
