This really does sound like the stuff from the Prey novel. If I'm not mistaken - within the novel he speaks about how the Nano-particles do the swarming - and I think its AI in the particles that makes each particle aware of the particles around it. Which I think may be what they might be doing with the things in the Video (man - I am dying to see that now!)...
