Thanks to all who helped. I've installed FoxyPreviewer and it did what I wanted straight away, ie create a report as a PDF without any user intervention. It is very powerful and I have barely scratched the surface. Unfortunately the documentation assumes a level of knowledge which is beyond mine - I still don't understand what a Report Listener is :-). Peter, you may be getting some cries for help before long but at the moment it has cracked the immediate problem.
