I want you to run X and use the command $ xset dpms force off This works on my Cube G4, and might work on your iMac G3 because both machines have ATI Rage 128 graphics. To start X on your iMac, put put "machdep.allowaperture=2" in /etc/sysctl.conf, do "rcctl enable xenodm", and reboot. I have an external display on my Cube's VGA port, so my other option is the display's power button. Your iMac's internal display doesn't have a power button, but does use much electricity (it's an old CRT), so I suggest running X for xset(1). There is no Rage 128 driver in OpenBSD's kernel, but there is r128(4) in X, so X is the only way to off the display.
