Some clients may have misguding configuration settings. For example, some older versions of Evolution had a choice between "No encryption", "SSL" and "TLS" when sending mail. The "SSL" and "TLS" options were actually misguiding, because the program could use TLS in both cases, and the actual difference was use of TLS-wrapped SMTP (like on port 465) in case of "SSL" vs use of STARTTLS after establishing cleartext SMTP session (like on port 587) in case of "TLS".
