I think I found the root cause of the problem (other than me being a
clueless idiot). I had this in my master.cf:

smtp     inet  n     -     y     -     -        smtpd
     -o content_filter=spamassassin

submission inet  n     -     y     -     -        smtpe
    -o content_filter=spamassassin
  -o syslog_name=postfix/submission
  -o smtpd_tls_security_level=may
  -o smtpd_sasl_auth_enable=yes

Removing the second SA content filter in the "submission" stanza did
the trick. I was wondering why outgoing mail was getting fed through
SA. It's not supposed to be, is it?
