Personally, I use the GCOS field in /etc/passwd (the 5th field). Mine
looks moreless like "Charlie <hotstname> &", and all my diagnostic
messages come fairly recognizable. One real world example:

root:*:0:0:Charlie Baobab &:/root:/bin/csh
