Hmm, I have been using this for many years, since one time when my 
own PTR lookup failed and I found I was being rejected by gmail and 
numerous other providers.

I admit I am not watching the logs, but likewise I have not had any 
complaints from users in this time.

I think it's reasonable now to expect a legitimate SMTP client to 
have a PTR record, and perhaps in the not-too-distant future to 
expect PTR/A matching.
